Today, more than 100 countries have adopted the ISO 9001 quality management system as a national standard. Some countries, most notably those in the European Union, have made ISO 9001 compliance a mandatory part of conformity assessment schemes for certain regulated products. In addition, ISO 9001 is increasingly becoming a factor in obtaining military and government contracts. For example, prominent organizations like the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) now require suppliers to be ISO 9001 compliant.
Because ISO 9001 provides basic guidelines and a framework for quality management and continuous improvement, it is also used as a basis for new system requirements, such as QS-9000 for automobile, AS-9000 for aerospace, TL-9000 for tele-communicate and even ISO 14001 for the environment.
Underwriters’ Laboratory (UL), the leading U.S.-headquartered ISO 9001 registrar, has registered more than 3,400 firms since 1989. Total registrations in the United States will soon reach the 45,000 mark with a growth rate of some 3,000 new registrations each year. Worldwide, there are now nearly 430,000 ISO 9001 registrations; the number of registrations has in fact nearly quadrupled over the past few years.
